PRESS STATEMENT - 23 SEPTEMBER 2009

It was yesterday announced by the eThekwini Council that the City's Executive Committee (EXCO) has agreed to purchase the Umgeni River Bird Park from Tsogo Sun Gaming.

Responding to the announcement, Thabo Mosololi, Finance Director of Tsogo Sun Gaming says, “We are absolutely delighted that the Council is willing to take steps towards keeping the Bird Park open.  Although there was no risk to the birds as plans were already underway to relocate them to new homes, it is the best possible option for a collection of rare birds to remain in Durban where they can continue to be one of the City’s tourism assets and provide an ongoing source of education about rare birds in southern Africa.

We will, however, only be in a position to comment fully on the matter once we have reached agreement with Council.”

Enquiries regarding the planned operation and management of the Bird Park, plans to ensure its financial sustainability, staffing issues, etc, should be addressed to Dr Mike Sutcliffe.  Tsogo Sun Gaming is not in a position to comment on any of these matters.

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF TSOGO SUN GAMING BY STRATEGIC PUBLIC RELATIONS.  FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT VANESSA NAUDÉ ON (011) 672-2037 OR Vanessa@stratpr.co.za.
